The Mayans were wrong and I am back for my annual blog update:). After
having penned two blog posts last December I dropped off the radar. One of my
resolutions for 2012 was to keep blogging; well I could not. This post is
probably a feeble attempt to redeem myself on the last day of the year.
I love my job! I never thought that I would ever say that and it’s
refreshing. I know of many people, friends and peers, who don't necessarily feel
that way. Over the years I have been a part of several discussions that have revolved
around the fact that the work we do is not entirely satisfying. Even today I
don't shy away from venting when I am around friends. The difference is that I
am probably not as convinced as I was before.
There are three things that make you want to stay in your job- 1) the money,
2) colleagues and 3) the work that you do- not necessarily in that order. If
you have two out of three going for you then chances are that you will not want
to quit. Not sure if someone told me this or if I read it somewhere but it
seems to ring true. But not wanting to quit does not mean that you love your
job.
I want to add a fourth criteria and that’s Learning. I love my job because I
am pushed to learn every day, I am pushed to think on my feet and apply what I
have learnt, I can make mistakes but not repeat them and I have ample
opportunity to share my learning and experiences with younger colleagues. So
this now means that I need to have at least three out of four to keep me going and learning is not optional.
For now I have it and I am enjoying it.
Happy New Year to All and hopefully I will write more often in the coming year.
